Masum Space, located in the densely populated and overbuilt area of Muhammadpur, Dhaka, exemplifies our commitment to innovative and context-sensitive design.

Muhammadpur is characterized by its dense, concrete jungle-like environment. The site for Masum Space is situated on a west-facing plot with the main road running south to north. This orientation and the urban context presented several challenges: the need for effective privacy solutions from adjacent buildings, optimal use of the only available air tunnel, and mitigating the harsh solar temperatures that the west-facing verandas are subjected to.

Our design approach for Masum Space began with addressing privacy and ventilation issues. Observing that most buildings along the road had verandas facing west but remained unutilized due to heat and privacy concerns, we introduced angular vertical fins. These fins not only capture airflow from the frontal road but also provide a visual screen, allowing residents to enjoy their verandas comfortably and privately.

Moreover, we sought to infuse the architecture with a sense of welcome and homeliness. The entrance was designed to be inviting, with a human scale and a warm approach that makes residents feel at home from the moment they arrive.

One of the core concepts of Masum Space is fostering a sense of community among its residents. Unlike most of the apartment buildings in Dhaka, where units are identical and lack individuality, Masum Space offers similar yet distinct units. This subtle variation creates opportunities for residents to engage in conversations and develop connections, turning neighbors into friends and fostering a vibrant community life.

Cost efficiency and contextual relevance guided our choice of materials. While concrete would have been prohibitively expensive for our client, brick emerged as a cost-effective alternative. Beyond its economic advantages, brick resonates with the local context, evoking a sense of nostalgia and homeliness. This material choice aligns with our vision of creating spaces that are both functional and emotionally resonant.

Masum Space is a testament to Chinta Sthapatya’s dedication to crafting architectural solutions that are innovative, contextually appropriate, and community-oriented. By addressing the unique challenges of the site, we have created a space that not only meets the practical needs of its residents but also enriches their daily lives with a sense of belonging and home.
