Bhuiyan Bari began with a family story rather than a conventional housing brief. In Mahigonj, Rangpur, the house is the permanent home of an elderly couple, while their three daughters live elsewhere—some abroad and others in the city—and return with their families during holidays and visits. We therefore approached the project as two homes within one: a complete, comfortable everyday residence for the parents and a family retreat where the daughters and grandchildren can reconnect with their parents, their childhood, and their roots. The architecture is intended not only to accommodate these returns, but also to nurture the desire to return by offering places where memories can continue to form.

Rangpur is growing rapidly, and much of its new residential fabric follows a familiar apartment model organized around a central stair and repeated units. The client initially considered a similar solution, but the family’s particular way of living suggested another direction. The site also presented environmental and cultural challenges. The western edge faces the access road and the harsh afternoon sun, while dust and heat from rice-processing activity and open fields affect the south and southeast. At the same time, the family’s conservative Muslim lifestyle required careful control of privacy and purdah, and security was a major concern. Our task was to protect the house without isolating it from light, air, landscape, or family life.

We developed the project through the idea of Inside Out. From the street, Bhuiyan Bari appears as a solid, robust brick box that provides privacy, security, and a sense of protection. Inside, however, the mass is opened, carved, and layered with courtyards, gardens, verandas, and long views. We treated the volume almost like a cave cut from a solid block, shaping voids within it to connect the rooms and bring the experience of the outdoors deep into the house. The result is an inward-looking home that feels open rather than enclosed: the family remains secure inside, yet continually encounters sky, vegetation, daylight, breeze, and changing weather.

Along the western street frontage, privacy and climate control are achieved through a sequence of layers rather than a single defensive wall. The road is followed by an outer garden, a perforated brick screen, another garden, a veranda and circulation zone, the windows, and finally the private sleeping rooms. This depth pushes the street visually and physically away from the bedrooms. The porous wall, assembled from locally available thirteen-hole bricks in a carefully developed zigzag pattern, filters the severe western sun, softens dust and noise, permits airflow, and limits direct views from outside. The bedrooms can therefore open toward planted verandas without sacrificing privacy.

Security grilles are usually fixed directly to windows in the local context, often interrupting the view and making domestic rooms feel confined. At Bhuiyan Bari, we moved this protective layer away from the windows and lifted it above the gardens and verandas. The glazing remains visually clear while the planted intermediate spaces stay within the secure envelope of the house. Over time, the elevated grille becomes a contemporary interpretation of the Bengali macha—a light framework on which creepers, flowers, and vegetables can grow. Security is thus transformed into a support for shade, cultivation, and everyday domestic life.

A central courtyard organizes the environmental and social life of the house. It draws cleaner southeastern air into the interior, supports cross-ventilation, introduces daylight, and creates a protected microclimate away from the dusty southern edge. It is also a shared visual anchor: movement through the house repeatedly returns to garden, sky, and family activity. Around it, small gardens and pocket spaces create settings for unplanned moments—a quiet conversation, a cup of tea or coffee, a child at play, or a grandparent watching nearby. These in-between spaces, rather than the named rooms alone, are the emotional center of the project.

The plan is intentionally simple. A clear circulation spine serves the sleeping spaces, living and dining areas, kitchen, toilets, utilities, verandas, and gardens. Openings are aligned with this spine so that a view beginning inside continues through several spatial layers and, where possible, beyond the site boundary. This visual depth makes the compact organization feel generous and reinforces the sensation of being outdoors while remaining protected. At the end of the circulation, a sitting pocket creates a pause; elsewhere, a playground sits beside an adult gathering area, a gardening counter allows tools and plants to be handled close to the courtyard, and broad window platforms become informal places to sit.

Two entrances support different rhythms of family life. The formal entrance welcomes visitors toward the living space and establishes a long vista across the circulation and sleeping zones to a distant sitting area. A service entrance leads toward the kitchen garden, kitchen veranda, and kolpaar—a reinterpretation of the traditional Bengali household place associated with a tube well, washing hands and feet, collecting water, and everyday outdoor work. The veranda beside the kitchen extends food preparation and domestic activity into a shaded semi-open space, keeping familiar rural practices present within a contemporary urban home.

Subtle changes in floor level help define degrees of privacy without relying on walls. Less private shared areas occupy the lower level, while more private zones rise by approximately one and a half to two feet. Crossing these small thresholds produces the feeling of passing through a gateway; the body senses that it has moved from one layer of the house to another. This sequence of levels, gardens, screens, verandas, and rooms allows privacy to be understood gradually and intuitively.

On the roof, a private bedroom is paired with a generous open terrace. The room provides a quiet place for visiting family members, while the remaining roof becomes a flexible setting for gatherings, celebrations, play, and leisure. This balance of retreat and togetherness reflects the larger ambition of the house: individual families can find privacy when needed, yet remain connected through shared spaces.

Local burned red brick gives Bhuiyan Bari its structure, texture, and character. The house is primarily supported by load-bearing masonry, and the construction language draws from familiar local techniques while adapting them to the design. Modified running bonds, arches, vaults, and the custom perforated screen were carefully coordinated with structural requirements. Where reinforced-concrete lintels were necessary, sliced brick faces and specially formed U-shaped brick elements conceal the concrete to preserve the continuity of the masonry. The red brick is deliberately paired with grass, gardens, and climbing plants, allowing the architecture and landscape to intensify one another.

For us, Bhuiyan Bari is not a static object completed at the end of construction. It is a framework for family continuity. As the gardens mature, vines spread across the macha, children grow, and repeated visits accumulate into shared memories, the house will continue to change. Its strongest contribution lies in turning privacy, security, climate, and family separation into opportunities for connection—between inside and outside, parents and daughters, grandparents and grandchildren, and contemporary urban life and the cultural memory of home.
